Jet lag can be one of the worst, and certainly one of the most frustrating, aspects of long distance travel. Also called desynchronosis (meaning “out of time”), jet lag occurs when travellers pass through multiple time zones, arriving several hours ahead or behind their “home” time.

Here, however, we need to sound a word of caution. One common problem with jet lag is that, for many people, the true effects of jet lag are not immediately apparent and it may take a day or two to “catch up” with you. In addition, the excitement of arriving at your holiday destination, or for an important business meeting, may also tend to mask the symptoms of jet lag.

Studies have shown that 93% to 96% of long flight travelers experience jet lag. The number of time zones that one crosses seems to be the major contributor to jet lag. Crossing time zones can cause circadian dysrhythmia or throw our inner biological clock out of its rhythm.

Jetlag symptoms can last for just a few hours – all the way up to a week (for more acute cases). Generally though, travelers find on a normal flight between the US and Europe, the effects of Jetlag last for a couple of days.

The major cause of jet lag is the shift in time between that recorded by your body clock and the actual time at your destination following a long-haul flight. The secret to curing jet lag is therefore to re-adjust your body clock to bring it into line with local time and taking melatonin can be an effective way of doing this.

The direction that the travel occurs can have an impact upon the severity of the jetlag symptoms. When people travel westward most experts say that the jetlag symptoms are more moderate than when they travel eastward. Why? Because the internal body clock actually gets an extension of 27 hours when traveling westward.

At high altitudes, the humidity is low. Hence the body tends to get dehydrated when flying. In order to prevent this dehydration, you must drink sufficient water during the flight. Have one glass of water for each hour of the flight. In order to make the best use of water, add some amount of licorice, cardamom, cinnamon or ginger to it.

Jet lag symptoms are also more marked when you are traveling east and tend to affect you less when flying west. If you are traveling from London to Singapore on holiday for example you will experience more jet lag on arrival in Singapore at the start of your holiday than you will in London when you return.

Move around during your flight. It is advisable to exercise while on the plane as this will help with your body’s circulation. You can walk around once in a while, move your ankles and do some stretching.
