Choosing the food you eat based simply on the label at the supermarket is not always the best choice. Sure, a low fat or diet version of a favorite snack, treat or dessert may be a better option than the regular version, but is it the best option. Look for healthier alternatives for snacking in between meals, low fat cereal bars and natural products, fruit and juice. It is not so much the amount you eat but rather what you eat that makes the difference.
Reduce the fat, especially the saturated fat, which is mostly found in meat and dairy products. Exchange the butter and margarine with extra-virgin olive oil. Avoid oils with high percentage of saturated and polyunsaturated fat. Use oils which contain mostly monounsaturated fat. Using the right kinds of fat (with moderation) is more important than reducing the fat in general. Instead of milk you may want to drink yogurt (containing live cultures) which is better for the stomach.
Choose foods that provide a rich source of many of the essential nutrients needed for optimal health. Include the fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds, lean meats, fish, olive oil, herbs and spices that you enjoy and are familiar to you and your family. An occasional exotic food may be a new experience, but if you or your family will not eat it, why include it in your list? When it comes to vegetables, try picking from the rainbow of colors available to maximize variety. Buy non-starchy vegetables such as spinach, carrots, broccoli or green beans.
Many modern fast-food restaurants also have salad bars, so choose a fresh green salad to accompany your main meal. But again beware of adding fattening extras, such as cheeses, dressings and mayonnaise. Low-calorie dressings, if available, are the best alternative.
When you study the dietary restrictions that God gave His people in the Bible, you will find all of these scavengers prohibited for health reasons. When man does not abide by these dietary restrictions that God set up for our good, he starts consuming a whole host of toxins that accumulate in his body and eventually lead to all kinds of terrible physical health problems and illnesses. If you don’t believe me, ask any marine biologist about the levels of mercury and other poisons found in clams and scallops. In summary, certain creatures that God made were strictly forbidden to be eaten because God did not make them to be food for mankind. Pigs, shellfish, birds of prey, and the like are not to be eaten by man, and if they are, they will cause him to become sick and loaded with toxins that are destructive to the body. They are God-made creatures, but they are not God-made foods.
The benefits of eating a healthy diet include living a longer life, feeling happier, gaining vitality, weight loss, and a healthy appearance. Processed food decrease the quality of our lives, so eating healthy foods means we can better fight diseases and live longer. When it comes to happiness, studies have shown that eating healthy foods is an excellent natural anti-depressant.
