Strep throat is inflammation of the throat, tonsils and lymph nodes due to infection with group A streptococcus bacteria. Strep throat is very common during the flu seasons and it can be preceded by mild symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing or cough. The incubation period of strep throat is around 3-5 days and most symptoms occur within this period of time. Common symptoms of strep throat are: throat inflammation and swelling, difficult swallowing, difficult breathing, mucus-producing cough, fatigue, body weakness, headache, nausea, poor appetite, enlargement of the lymph nodes and tonsils, excessive sweating and fever.

Generally, infections cause the majority of sore throats and are contagious. Infections are caused either by viruses such as the flu, the common cold, mononucleosis, or by bacteria such as strep, or hemophilus. While bacteria do respond to antibiotic treatments, viruses do not. Most viral sore throats accompany flu or colds along with a stuffy, runny nose, sneezing, and the accompanying aches and pains.

The way that we usually get a sore throat is by inhaling the bacteria or virus that causes the infection. It is common for these agents to be present in microscopic droplets in the air such as when a person sneezes. It is also possible to pick up the infection if you touch your nose or mouth after touching an object shared with another person with the condition. This is the reason some schools introduce a policy of cleaning door handles when there is an outbreak. Once you’ve been affected, it can take between 2 and 4 days before any symptoms are shown.

Add half teaspoon of salt and a pinch of cayenne pepper to ΒΌ cup of warm water. Gargle with this mix for a minute or two. Repeat as needed or at least 3 times a day. The cayenne pepper numbs the nerves in the throat and can relieve the pain. The salt and warm water cleanses the throat and rinses away any microbes or toxins.

Ginger is an effective herbal remedy for sore throat. The good thing about ginger is it is a common item in the kitchen. In preparing ginger, peel the skin off and slice it into coin shapes. Place the ginger pieces into a small pot with water and boil it. You will know that it is ready when the liquid turns yellow. You may also add your favorite sweetener to make the taste better. Sip it slowly and you will be able to feel the effects.

One of the oldest and the most trusted ways in relieving sore throat is with apple cider vinegar. Many people gargle with this concoction upon experiencing the initial uncomfortable aches. Several times per day will usually do the trick. This natural remedy tends to ease the pain almost immediately. Another great remedy for reducing throat pain comes from the consumption of garlic. Many people swear by this technique as it relieves the pain almost instantly by coating the throat and soothing the soreness. However, some people are comfortable with simply cutting a garlic clove into little slices and eating it plain.
