C-section or cesarean section is defined as a surgical procedure of giving birth. This is opposed to normal delivery or vaginal delivery. In a cesarean section, an incision is made through the mother’s abdomen and uterus to deliver the baby.

Why a C-section Is Needed

Cesarean section is usually done for the following reasons:

The procedure is done when there is a very high risk for the mother or for the baby or both if normal delivery is to be performed. One reason for this is when the baby is thought to be too big to fit or pass through the mother’s vaginal opening, thereby imperiling the life of either the baby or the mother.

To terminate a risky pregnancy. This is done when continuing with the pregnancy will bring in a lot of harm to both the mother and her baby. Most commonly, the reason for doing this is when there are expected problems that may be encountered during a normal delivery.

When the baby has been monitored to have some form of debilitating disease or disorder that may have resulted during the pregnancy period. As such, a cesarean operation is done to prevent giving birth to a child who may have some deformities.

Types of Cesarean Operation

Today, a cesarean section is done for a variety of reasons, aside from those enumerated above. Some are in fact more of a mater of choice than a question of necessity. As such, there are also different types of cesarean operation that mothers may choose from. The following are the most common types:

Classical cesarean section involves making a longitudinal incision to crate a large space to deliver the baby. However, with the coming of several other types of cesarean operation, this is now rarely used because of the complications involved.

Lower uterine segment section. This involves making a transverse cut above the edge of the bladder. This is the most commonly used cesarean section because it results to lesser blood loss.

Crash cesarean section. This type is performed when there is an emergency situation when there are certain complications that may appear suddenly during labor. This requires quick action in order to save the mother or child or both.

Cesarean hysterectomy. This is a cesarean operation that is followed by the removal of the uterus. This is done in cases of intractable bleeding wherein the placenta could not be separated from the uterus.

Cesarean operation is the delivery of choice for most common mothers today. However, the process is very expensive compared to normal delivery. On top of it, there are plenty of risks associated with the procedure that anyone planning to undergo the operation should weight all options carefully and thoroughly. This is important in order to eliminate the risks that both mother and child faces during the operation.
